AARP is partnering with Shred-It, a secure document destruction company, to host a free document shredding event for the residents of Algiers, Saturday, November 5, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Jo Ellen Smith/Algiers Clinic parking lot, located at 4422 General Meyer Avenue. The event is for individuals. There will be a limit of up to 5 bags or medium sized boxes of documents per vehicle. "It's estimated that every year more than eight million Americans fall victim to identity theft, losing over 40 billion dollars annually," said Nancy McPherson, State Director, AARP Louisiana. "We encourage people to clean out old files containing financial and medical records, legal documents, credit card receipts and a host of other personal information, and bring it to the AARP shredding event where it will be destroyed on site." AARP staff and volunteers will be on hand at the event to help remove materials from vehicles and provide information about identity theft and consumer fraud. Participating partners for the free shredding event include Algiers Economic Development Foundation, Better Business Bureau of Greater New Orleans, Diverse Developments, LLC, and Shred-It. |
