Algiers Historical Society Meeting - Sat., June 18, 2016

AHS MEETING: SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 2016; 10 am - 12 noon

TOPIC: SAVE OUR CEMETERIES - VOLUNTEERS WHO CARE

Ms Jeanne WILSON, a volunteer Save Our Cemeteries (SOC) tour guide, will discuss the history of this non-profit organization, dedicated to the preservation of the 31 historic cemeteries in New Orleans. SOC is one of the oldest of such preservation organizations in the United States.

In addition, Ms WILSON will talk about the various events sponsored by SOC, including "A Run Through History," which is a 1 Mile and 5K (3.1 Miles) Run/Walk, as well as lectures on various topics of interests, held throughout the year. SOC offers various tours through some of New Orleans' most historic cemeteries and has recently added the very popular “Tombs By Twilight Tour,” which is an evening tour of St. Louis No. 1 Cemetery, which is conducted on the fourth (4th) Saturday of each month.

Ms WILSON holds a Masters Degree in Education. Besides giving tours for SOC, she serves on the Educational Outreach Committee and has volunteered for various restoration and clean-up projects in several cemeteries. In 2014, she was the recipient of the SOC's "Louise SAENZ Award" for her volunteer work with the organization.

LOCATION: Algiers Regional Library, 3014 Holiday Dr., New Orleans Westbank - Algiers, LA 70131-- First Floor Meeting Room.

GENERAL MEETINGS: The Algiers Historical Society (AHS) meets the 3rd Saturday of each month, from 10 am to 12 noon, unless otherwise noted. We meet in the 1st floor meeting room of the Algiers Regional Library, 3014 Holiday Dr., New Orleans (Algiers), LA 70131 Library Ph:504-596-2641 There is no AHS meeting in December.

All AHS monthly meetings are FREE and open to the public. Yes, please do bring someone with you.

Free hot coffee and breakfast snacks kindly provided by Tout de Suite Cafe, 347 Verret St. corner Alix St., in Algiers Point, across from the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. We also have complementary chilled bottled water.
