Renee Lewis-Carter, principal of Martin Behrman Charter School of Arts & Sciences in Algiers, was named 2016 Middle School Principal of the Year. Lewis Carter was  honored by the state Department of Education during the 9th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebration in Baton Rouge.
Lewis-Carter was a teacher and special education coordinator, but felt becoming a principal would enable her to better help children learn. She has been principal at Martin Behrman Charter of Arts and Science since 2005.

Lewis-Carter said leading the school after Hurricane Katrina had a profound impact on her. When the school opened after the hurricane she said she looked around the room and noticed children wearing a variety of school uniforms.

"And I thought to myself, 'They evacuated with their uniforms.' It was in that moment that I knew our children were ready, and I knew that we had to stand and deliver,'' she said.
